June Events
Every June, we commemorate Pride Month. It’s a time to celebrate our God-given identities and recommit to the work of liberation for all LGBTQ+ people.
Raising of the Pride Flag

Trinity Church
It’s our tradition to raise Progress Pride flags outside Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel during Pride Month. The flags remind us of our commitment to celebrating and blessing the lives and gifts of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer siblings. The Progress Pride flag was designed in 2018 to better acknowledge trans people and Black and brown members of the LBGTQ+ community.
Holding Space for Pride: LGBTQ+ Community Gathering & Evensong
Wednesday, June 26 | 5:30–8pm
Trinity Commons and Trinity Church; Online
Come be in community and mark the end of Pride Month with a gathering that will celebrate LGBTQ+ life while providing space to grieve, name our fears and anxieties, and look toward the future with hope. A guided discussion and light meal will be followed by a reflective, affirming evensong service in Trinity Church. For online attendees, the service will be livestreamed starting at 6:45pm. Open to all; LGBTQ+ community members as well as allies are invited to take part. Spanish facilitation will be offered during in-person group discussion. Facilitated by Trinity’s Pastoral Care team in collaboration with the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute (PSI).

Gender-Free Haircut Club Tour Stop with the Dress Code Project
Friday, June 21
Trinity Commons
Teens in grades 9–12 are invited to make an appointment for a gender-free haircut. For one day, Trinity Commons will be transformed into a salon where young people can access gender-affirming styling. Open to all high school students from around New York City, including youth who plan to attend the NYPL’s Anti-Prom that evening.

Friday, June 21
New York Public Library
The New York Public Library hosts this popular annual event for teens that celebrates personal expression. Created in 2004, this program for ages 12–18 and offers an inclusive, safe space for attendees to embrace their sexuality, gender identity, culture, and style of dress. Trinity Youth members are invited to join this year’s celebration, which will feature snacks, dancing, and special book giveaways.

Trinity joins LGBTQ+ Episcopalians and allies from across the Diocese of New York.
The History of Pride
in New York City
On June 28, 1969, a group of LGBTQ+ people resisted a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street in the West Village. The ensuing rebellion lasted for five nights. This act of resistance is now known as the Stonewall Uprising and is widely recognized as the birth of the gay liberation movement in the United States. Since then, LGBTQ+ communities around the world have recognized June as Pride Month.
Collect for Pride
A collect is a prayer addressed to God with a specific focus. The Rev. Matt Welsch wrote this Collect for Pride Sunday in 2021: “Teach us to fully and radically love all your children as their true and whole selves.”
